Dalian is famous as a sports city. It has been home to many world-class track and field champions. Among them was female athlete Wang Junxia, who won a gold and a sliver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Since 1987, the coastal city of Dalian has hosted an annual race on the last Sunday of October. Thousands of professional athletes and amateurs from home and abroad wait all year to participate in this challenging marathon. In 1997, the event was upgraded to an international competition, with the approval of the World Track & Field League.
In 2005, All Nippon Airlines took over sponsorship of the race and moved the event to the warmer season of June. The name changed accordingly, to the "ANA Cup" Dalian International Marathon Race. |
