In the book, Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, Stanley is squashed flat by a falling bulletin board at school. In his new condition, Flat Stanley realizes he can travel and visit friends in a simple envelope. This is the premise used by the Flat Stanley Project, a group of teachers who want to provide students with an opportunity to share experiences and learn about people all over the country and world.
The process begins when students make Flat Stanleys out of paper and begin a journal with him. After a few days, both the Flat Stanley and journal are sent to another school, where students there treat Flat Stanley as an honored guest and complete the journal. Flat Stanley and his journal are then returned to the original sender. The project allows students to plot the travels of their Flat Stanely on maps and share his journal entries. Often, a Flat Stanley returns with a pin or postcard from his visit.
