Tour Information:
The Lushun District (known as Dalian's Forbidden City) is one of the most historic areas in Northeast China. A naval port under two colonial powers, the area was also where Japan destroyed the Russian Fleet at anchor, beginning the Russo-Japanese War, in a pre-Pearl Harbor tactic. Complete with fortifications from the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Czarist Russia, and Imperial Japan, the location is a time capsule of China's struggle against foreign powers.

It is also for this reason, that foreigners are forbidden to visit many of the more sensitive areas. Even with the restrictions, this unique Forbidden Tour offers visitors a chance to stand on the hallowed ground that decided the fate of Manchuria, and eventually expanded the Second Sino-Japanese War into a direct conflict with America - which formally began the Second World War.
A Hidden History:
Other significant locations of historical note are not detailed here, even though local Chinese citizens have access to them and both vintage and current photography exists.

Dalian, specifically the Southern District of Lushun, has a vast and fascinating background. Unfortunately, while interesting to foreign tourists, it is a bitter reminder to the Chinese of their troubled past under foreign occupations. This creates a potential to stir up feelings from questions that are safer left unasked.

In addition, a high concentration of Chinese military forces are fortified around these locations, which evolved from their original historical roots. Lushun is home to the largest Naval Fleet in Northeast China, including a major submarine base, shipyard, and port facility. Its strategic location is considered the gateway to Beijing and Tianjing, protecting China's capital city and major industrial port.

These special locations are listed in many tour guides, but are not presented here to avoid confusion about which sights are offered on this tour. While worth the visit, these restricted locations reside in Foreigner Forbidden Zones and cannot be reached without threat of legal consequences. Only zones that welcome foreigners are included here, since a visit to the Public Security Bureau is not an intended part of this tour.
Political Note:
It is no secret that Sino-Japanese relations are at an all time low. And while history is based on facts, the interpretation of events is often colored to fit political perspectives.

In this regard, Discover Dalian is mindful of the feelings pertaining to these historical tensions and remains a neutral entity. Information presented both here and on the tour refrain from making any moral judgments about past events. The accounts are offered without bias or political influence.
